Pressure Systems assembled and tested a configuration in which its Series 550 waterMONITOR submersible datalogging level transducer is accessed over the Internet using cellar modem and PSI's K-ware application software. Although PSI used a particular communication service provided and compatible hardware, similar configurations can be replicated using different providers and hardware as desired by the user or more suitable for their locale.
The configuration PSI employed utilized CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) communication as this was the protocol inherent in the service provided by Motient, a reseller of Sprint's "3G" phone network. Two different CDMA cellular modem suppliers were tested though the particular device from Digi International was the more preferable of the two. Separate comprehensive application notes detailing the setup and operation are available in pdf format - Digi Connect 'RG' Cell phone Device and AirLink "Raven" Cell Phone Modem.
GSM (Global System for Mobile communications), which may be more prevalent in certain locations, was initially attempted but issues surrounding the GSM provider precluded the configuration from being entirely successful. It is understood that those issues have since been resolved so there is no reason to believe that GSM could not also be successfully employed, which is mentioned in the application notes.
Pressure Systems has successfully implemented this application on host PCs with both Windows® 2000 and Windows® XP operating system.
